A routine IPL evening in Guwahati has spiraled into a major off-field controversy after Rajasthan Royals team manager Romi Bhinder was caught on camera using a mobile phone in the team dugout during their IPL 2026 clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, a clear breach of the league’s anti-corruption protocols.
The incident occurred during the 11th over of RR’s chase. Bhinder was seen scrolling on his phone while teen sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi, seated beside him, appeared to glance at the screen. The visuals quickly went viral, raising serious questions about a potential breach of anti-corruption guidelines.
The PMOA Protocol, 2026, published on the IPL’s official website, is unambiguous on the matter, a team manager may carry a phone but is strictly prohibited from using it in the dugout. Usage is permitted only within the dressing room.

A BCCI official confirmed the breach, and the board has since launched a formal investigation. Secretary Devajit Saikia stated that video footage would be reviewed and evidence gathered before any conclusion was reached.
A fresh angle has since emerged in Bhinder’s defense. Reports suggest he was using the phone due to a serious medical condition, having suffered a lung collapse in the past. The long climb to the dressing room was physically challenging. His associates have urged officials to consider his health before taking action.
Nevertheless, given Bhinder’s long association with the franchise since the IPL’s inception, many feel he should have been well aware of the rules. Possible penalties range from a formal warning to a match ban.
IPL founding chairman Lalit Modi also called for immediate action from the Governing Council, adding further pressure on officials to act swiftly.
