Quinton de Kock announced his return to the Mumbai Indians fold in the most emphatic fashion possible, with a stunning, unbeaten century that single-handedly rescued his side from an early collapse against Punjab Kings in IPL 2026.
De Kock made his first appearance in the Mumbai Indians playing XI in five years, having spent time at Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders in between. His road back to MI was an unlikely one, his name was initially missing from the IPL 2026 shortlist, but reports later revealed that the Mumbai Indians had specifically requested the management to add him, before picking him up at his base price of ₹2 crore.
Despite being on the squad, De Kock had been kept out of the playing XI, with Ryan Rickelton preferred as the first-choice opener alongside Rohit Sharma. However, fate intervened when Rohit was ruled out with a hamstring injury ahead of the Punjab Kings clash, opening the door for De Kock to step up.

And step up he did. Mumbai lost two key wickets, Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav, in the third over itself, threatening to derail the innings early. But De Kock stood firm, smashing a 53-ball century to keep the hosts firmly in contention. He eventually finished with an unbeaten 112 off 60 balls.
Alongside De Kock, Naman Dhir chipped in with a crucial half-century. The two stitched a 122-run partnership, one of the biggest highlights of the first innings.
Mumbai Indians posted 195 runs on the board, though head coach Mahela Jayawardene had set a mid-innings target of 170–180 runs, suggesting the management may have felt a few extra runs were left on the table against a quality side like Punjab.
The match also produced one of the most talked-about moments of the IPL 2026 Season, when Shreyas Iyer and Xavier Bartlett combined for what many are calling arguably the greatest catch in IPL history to dismiss Hardik Pandya.
De Kock’s knock was a timely reminder of his class, and a statement that his best days in blue are far from over.
