The Pakistan Super League has handed Zimbabwe pace bowler Blessing Muzarabani a two-year ban, effectively keeping him out of the tournament until 2029, after he abandoned a commitment to Islamabad United in favor of a far more lucrative deal with Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.

Muzarabani had initially been brought into the PSL as a replacement for West Indian pacer Shamar Joseph, following a mutual termination of Joseph’s contract with Islamabad United. His expected salary was around PKR 11 million, roughly US$40,000, a standard rate for high-profile overseas fast bowlers in the league.

However, when KKR came calling as a replacement for injured Bangladesh seamer Mustafizur Rahman, Muzarabani could not resist. The IPL offer was reportedly worth around US$160,000, nearly four times his PSL earnings. Crucially, although terms had been agreed with Islamabad United, the formal contract had not yet been signed, giving the player a legal escape route from his commitment.

The PCB described Muzarabani’s withdrawal as “a fundamental failure to honour agreed-upon commitments” that undermined the “professional framework of the league,” stressing that such conduct weakens contractual discipline and damages the tournament’s credibility.

The punishment is notably stiffer than a similar case last year, when South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch received a one-year PSL ban after withdrawing from a deal with Peshawar Zalmi to join the Mumbai Indians as an injury replacement. Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka also faces an ongoing inquiry after leaving Lahore Qalandars for Rajasthan Royals, though no formal verdict has been issued in that case.

On the field, Muzarabani has played two matches for KKR this IPL 2026 season, impressing with a four-wicket haul against Sunrisers Hyderabad before being dropped from the playing XI. KKR themselves remain at the foot of the points table, yet to register a single win.

The episode throws a sharp spotlight on the growing financial chasm between franchise cricket’s biggest leagues and the mounting challenges smaller tournaments face in securing international talent against the IPL’s overwhelming financial pull.
