Cricket Australia is edging closer to making history by staging the opening match of the 2026–27 Big Bash League season in Chennai, India, a move that would mark the first time the competition has been played on foreign soil.

The MA Chidambaram Stadium, home of IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings, is on course to host the season opener in December, after Cricket Australia first identified the venue as a potential host back in February.

Following months of talks, CA has received positive feedback from both the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association and the Board of Control for Cricket in India, allowing planning to move forward. A five-member CA delegation attended CSK’s final IPL home match as part of a formal venue inspection, with BCCI president Mithun Manhas also present.

However, the fixture is not yet a done deal. Final government-level approvals are still required before the match can be formally confirmed.

Several logistical hurdles remain, including the absence of direct flights between Australia and Chennai, December weather concerns due to the city’s monsoon season, and broadcast timing challenges for Australian television audiences.

Among the franchises open to participating are Sydney Thunder, Melbourne Stars, and Melbourne Renegades. The concept mirrors a growing global trend, similar to the NRL’s Las Vegas season opener.

If confirmed, the Chennai fixture would represent a landmark moment in the BBL’s effort to grow its international footprint.
