India’s teenage batting prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi continues to capture the imagination of the cricketing world, and now former India batter Ambati Rayudu has drawn a striking comparison between the youngster and West Indies legend Brian Lara.
Speaking on a podcast, Rayudu was particularly struck by Suryavanshi’s extraordinary bat speed and natural flair, comparing his batting style to that of Lara and suggesting the teenager could greatly benefit from a direct conversation with the West Indies great to sharpen his technique.
“His bat speed is extraordinary. That whip he generates is special. I hope nobody tries to change it. If he learns to control his bat speed while defending, he will be an extraordinary talent,” Rayudu said. He also urged coaches to avoid overloading the youngster with advice and simply let him play freely.

The comparison carries special weight given that Suryavanshi has long idolised Lara himself. The teenage prodigy has openly cited the West Indian master and former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh as the legends who shaped his game, admiring their explosive, match-winning styles.
Lara, too, has previously praised Suryavanshi following his historic 35-ball hundred for Rajasthan Royals against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025, a knock that made him the youngest centurion in men’s T20s and the fastest IPL centurion among Indian players.
Now entering the IPL 2026 Season, fresh from being named Player of the Tournament at the U19 World Cup, Suryavanshi has one clear ambition: “This season, the goal is to win the trophy for the team.”
With Rahul Dravid mentoring him at Rajasthan Royals, the stage looks perfectly set for cricket’s next big star.
