BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has announced plans for an early start to the 20th edition of the Indian Premier League, aiming to shift the tournament window from late March-end May to March 10-May 15.

The move comes in response to mounting concerns from players and fans regarding extreme heat in late May and pre-monsoon showers that disrupt matches. “We are discussing whether we can start the tournament a little bit earlier than the fag end of March to ensure no adverse weather conditions during playoffs and finals,” Saikia told PTI.

The new window would conclude the league by May 15, eliminating the challenges of escalating temperatures and rainfall that have plagued recent editions. “I’m hearing complaints from fans and players because not all are well-equipped to play in such hot conditions. To provide a pleasant atmosphere, we want to close it by May 15,” Saikia explained.

The BCCI has tasked former India fast bowler Abey Kuruvilla, General Manager (Games Development), with identifying feasible scheduling windows. However, logistical challenges remain, as the Border-Gavaskar Test series concludes around March 3, while the 150th Anniversary Test at Lord’s runs until March 15.

No League Expansion Yet

Saikia also ruled out expanding league-stage matches from 74 to 94. “It’s not feasible right now due to bilateral commitments of other nations. We have difficulties securing just this two-month window,” he stated, indicating discussions may resume post-2027.

The ambitious timeline underscores the BCCI’s commitment to making IPL 2027 a landmark tournament despite logistical constraints.
