The question that has dominated IPL 2026 conversations, when will MS Dhoni return? has taken a dramatic turn hours before Chennai Super Kings take on Mumbai Indians at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday night.
Former CSK star Suresh Raina, who shares a close bond with Dhoni, dropped a tantalising hint to official broadcasters, simply saying, “He might play tonight”, a statement that has sent CSK fans into a frenzy.
The 44-year-old legend has been sidelined since the start of the IPL 2026 Season due to a persistent calf injury aggravated during a warm-up session. He was widely expected to return for CSK’s previous clash against the Gujarat Titans, but that too did not materialise.

Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin offered a measured take ahead of the high-voltage encounter. Ashwin said, “Dhoni will not play, and that is 100%. MS can pull off a surprise because he is that kind of a guy, but I don’t see him playing.”
Ashwin had earlier suggested on his YouTube channel that CSK would be unlikely to risk Dhoni while they are still in playoff contention, adding that the team’s bowling has been impressive and if their batting clicks, three consecutive wins remain achievable.
CSK currently sit seventh in the standings with three wins and five losses from eight matches, while the Mumbai Indians are virtually eliminated with just two wins from eight games.
With Raina hinting at a return and Ashwin acknowledging Dhoni’s unpredictability, tonight’s match at Chepauk promises to be one of the most anticipated fixtures of the season.
