The Men’s Hockey Asia Cup started in 1982 in Karachi, Pakistan. The Asian Hockey Federation organizes this tournament, and the winning team earns a spot in the FIH Hockey World Cup. Since that first edition, 12 tournaments have taken place across different Asian cities.

Sixteen nations have played in the competition so far, but only three teams have ever lifted the trophy: Pakistan, South Korea, and India.

The tournament began with just seven teams in a round-robin format. Over the years, it grew in size and stature. Knockout stages were introduced in 1985, and the number of participating teams has ranged from seven to ten across editions.

Some nations have shown up for every single edition. Others have appeared only a handful of times. Here is a look at the ten countries with the most appearances.

The Stories Behind the Numbers

Here is the information on the Nations that appeared most in the Hockey Asia Cup:

India (12 Appearances)

India holds the distinction of playing in every single edition of the Hockey Asia Cup. They reached the final in eight of those twelve tournaments.

Their four titles came in 2003, 2007, 2017, and most recently in 2025, when they defeated South Korea 4-1 in the final at Rajgir, Bihar. India also finished as runners-up five times (1982, 1985, 1989, 1994, and 2013). No other team matches their consistency at this tournament.

Malaysia (12 Appearances)

Malaysia has also appeared in all twelve editions. While they have never won the title, their commitment to the competition remains strong.

They reached the final twice, finishing as runners-up in 2017 (losing to India in Dhaka) and again in 2022 (losing to South Korea in Jakarta). They also earned bronze medals in 2007 and 2025. Malaysia stands out as the best-performing team that has never won the trophy.

Bangladesh (12 Appearances)

Bangladesh played in the inaugural 1982 edition in Karachi and has maintained a presence across all twelve tournaments.

Their best result came in 1985 when they finished fifth. In 2025, they replaced Pakistan (which withdrew due to security concerns) and competed in Rajgir. Bangladesh may not be a contender for the title, but its record of 12 straight appearances shows real dedication to the sport.

South Korea (11 Appearances)

South Korea missed only the 1982 tournament. After that, they entered every edition and quickly became a dominant force.

They hold the record with five titles (1994, 1999, 2009, 2013, and 2022). Their first victory came in 1994 at Hiroshima, where they beat India 1-0 in the final. South Korea also reached the 2025 final but lost 4-1 to India. With five championships from eleven appearances, they have the best win rate of any team in the tournament.

Pakistan (11 Appearances)

Pakistan hosted the first-ever Asia Cup in 1982 and won it. They then won the next two editions as well (1985 and 1989), making them the only team to claim three consecutive titles. However, Pakistan has not won the tournament since 1989.

They still reached the final three more times (1999, 2003, and 2009) and remained regular participants until 2025, when they withdrew, citing security concerns amid the India-Pakistan crisis. That withdrawal brought their total to eleven appearances.

Japan (11 Appearances)

Japan was set to play in the inaugural 1982 edition but withdrew before the tournament began. From 1985 onward, they appeared in every edition.

While Japan has never reached the final, they have finished fourth on multiple occasions. They remain a competitive presence in Asian hockey and consistently qualify for the main tournament.

China (10 Appearances)

China participated in the 1982 inaugural edition and earned a bronze medal, their best-ever result. They have continued to appear regularly, totaling ten appearances.

China won the bronze again in another edition and has generally finished in the middle of the pack. They remain an important part of the Asian hockey landscape even without reaching the final.

Oman (5 Appearances)

Oman entered the Hockey Asia Cup scene later than most teams on this list. They have made five appearances, with their best finish being sixth place at the 2013 edition in Ipoh, Malaysia.

Singapore (4 Appearances)

Sri Lanka (4 Appearances)

Sri Lanka also played in the 1982 inaugural edition, finishing seventh (last place among the seven teams). Like Singapore, they have made four appearances in total.

The Hockey Asia Cup has grown from a seven-team round-robin event into a proper continental championship with group stages, knockout rounds, and global significance. The tournament now serves as a direct qualifier for the Hockey World Cup, which raises the stakes for every team involved.

The 2025 edition in Rajgir showed that the tournament continues to evolve. New teams, such as Kazakhstan and Chinese Taipei, entered the competition. India reclaimed the title after an eight-year gap. And with the next edition scheduled for 2029, the Hockey Asia Cup remains one of the most important events in Asian field hockey.
