Chennai Super Kings suffered a significant blow in IPL 2026 as young opener Ayush Mhatre was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to a left hamstring injury.

The promising batter, who captained India to U19 World Cup glory, had made a strong impression early in the season, scoring two fifties in six matches before suffering the injury while batting in Match 27 against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Moving swiftly to address the gap, CSK have signed right-arm fast bowler Akash Madhwal as Mhatre’s replacement, bringing him on board for a fee of INR 30 Lakh.

Madhwal is no stranger to the IPL stage. He has previously represented Mumbai Indians in 2023 and 2024, and Rajasthan Royals in 2025, featuring in 17 IPL matches and picking up 23 wickets.

The pacer announced himself to the cricketing world in dramatic fashion during his debut IPL season, recording sensational figures of 5/5 in the Eliminator against Lucknow Super Giants, a five-wicket haul that left the entire cricket fraternity stunned.

While Mhatre’s absence is a blow to CSK’s batting lineup, Madhwal’s addition strengthens the bowling attack at a crucial stage of the tournament. The seasoned speedster brings IPL experience and the ability to deliver under pressure, qualities that Chennai will be counting on as they push for a playoff berth in IPL 2026.
