It was a night to forget for the Kolkata Knight Riders. Not only did they slump to their fourth consecutive loss in IPL 2026, but captain Ajinkya Rahane also found himself on the wrong side of the rulebook, being handed a hefty fine for his team’s sluggish over-rate.

Rahane was penalized ₹12 lakh after KKR maintained a slow over rate during Match No. 22 of the TATA IPL 2026 against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. As it was the team’s first such offense of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, pertaining to minimum over-rate violations, Rahane bore the financial penalty alone.

On the field, KKR’s batting woes were evident from the start. KKR changed their opening combination, bringing Sunil Narine alongside Finn Allen. While Narine showed early aggression, Allen fell cheaply in the second over, and Narine himself departed during the powerplay, leaving KKR reeling at 36/2, their lowest powerplay score since 2024.

Defending 192/5, CSK maintained control throughout, restricting KKR to 160/7. Ramandeep Singh top-scored for KKR with 35, while Rovman Powell remained unbeaten on 31. Noor Ahmad (3/21) and Anshul Kamboj (2/32) were the pick of CSK’s bowlers, helping them clinch a 32-run victory and move to four points from five games.

A reflective Rahane acknowledged the team’s struggles after the match. “No real momentum with the bat. With the ball, we did really well, 190 on this wicket was a great total to defend, but our batting unit failed to capitalize,” he said.

Urging composure within the camp, he added, “It’s tough at the moment. What’s important is to stay positive, keep our heads up, and focus on the moment.”

With four defeats in a row, KKR’s campaign is at a serious crossroads.
