Virat Kohli did not just break the IPL run-scoring record – he made it unreachable. With 8,661 runs to his name, Kohli is the only player in IPL history to cross 8,000 runs, and he did it all wearing the same RCB jersey for 18 seasons.

Behind him sit Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, David Warner, and six other legends who together have hit over 60,000 IPL runs. This article breaks down the top 10 run-scorers in IPL history, using their real stats and the stories behind their numbers.

Each of these ten batters has left a permanent mark on the IPL. Now, let us look at what makes each of their stories truly special.

1. Virat Kohli (RCB) – 8,661 Runs

Kohli is the only player in IPL history to cross 8,000 runs. What makes this even more remarkable is that he spent 17 of those 18 seasons playing for a franchise that had never won the IPL title – and then finally lifted the trophy in 2025 when RCB defeated Punjab Kings by six runs at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

His 2016 season produced 973 runs, including four centuries, a record that may never be broken. Retained by RCB for INR 21 crore ahead of the 2026 season, he averaged over 50 in both the 2024 and 2025 seasons and won the Orange Cap in 2024 with 741 runs.

Kohli holds the records for most runs, most centuries (8), and most half-centuries (63) in IPL history. His consistency across 18 seasons without ever switching franchises is something no other player on this list can claim.

He waited 17 years for an IPL title, and when it finally came in 2025, Yash Dayal’s 15 wickets supported his 741-run campaign to make it a complete team victory.

2. Rohit Sharma (DCH/MI) – 7,046 Runs

Rohit is the only player in IPL history to win six titles – one with Deccan Chargers in 2009 and five as Mumbai Indians captain. He is also the first Indian and second overall to hit 300 or more sixes in IPL history. Despite being removed as MI captain in 2024, he was reacquired by the Mumbai Indians in the 2026 auction for INR 16.30 crore.

His leadership stats outshine his batting stats, but 302 sixes and 7,046 runs still make him one of the most impactful batters the tournament has produced, even if his average is lower than others on this list.

3. Shikhar Dhawan (DC/DCH/MI/PBKS/SRH) – 6,769 Runs

Dhawan holds the IPL record for most fours ever hit, with 768 boundaries across his career. He was the first player in IPL history to score two consecutive centuries, which he achieved for Delhi Capitals in 2020. In his final seasons, he captained Punjab Kings before injury cut short his 2024 campaign, after which he retired from all cricket.

He consistently scored 400 to 500-plus runs in most seasons from 2016 onwards, and his record of performing at a high level for five different franchises shows a professional who delivered wherever he was asked to go.

4. David Warner (DC/SRH) – 6,565 Runs

Warner is the most successful overseas batter in IPL history and the only batter to breach the 500-run mark in seven different IPL seasons, with six of those coming consecutively. He won the Orange Cap three times (2015, 2017, and 2019), which is the most by any batter in IPL history. He also holds the record for the highest death-over strike rate (233.9) among regular IPL batters.

He led Sunrisers Hyderabad to their only IPL title in 2016, won the Orange Cap the same year with 848 runs, and averaged over 40 across his entire IPL career, making him one of the most complete openers the format has ever seen.

5. Suresh Raina (CSK/GL) – 5,528 Runs

Raina was the first player in IPL history to reach 5,000 runs and is widely known as “Mr. IPL” for the impact he had on Chennai Super Kings across multiple title-winning campaigns. He was also the first Indian batter to hit 100 sixes in the IPL. Beyond his batting, he holds the record for most catches by a fielder in IPL history with 107, making him one of the most complete match-day cricketers the tournament has produced.

He was part of four CSK title-winning campaigns and consistently scored over 400 runs in most IPL seasons during the peak of his career.

6. MS Dhoni (CSK/RPS) – 5,439 Runs

Dhoni is the most-capped player in IPL history with 278 matches, and he holds the record for most not-out innings (100) in the tournament by a very wide margin. He has also achieved 200-plus dismissals as a wicketkeeper, which is the first time any player has reached that mark in IPL history. As of early 2026, the 44-year-old was confirmed to be training for another CSK season, chasing a sixth title.

Every single run he scores comes in the final phases of an innings under pressure. He led CSK to five IPL titles and shares the record for most titles won as captain with Rohit Sharma.

7. KL Rahul (DC/KXIP/LSG/PBKS/RCB/SRH) – 5,222 Runs

Rahul is the only Indian batter to score 500 or more runs in five consecutive IPL seasons (2018 to 2022), and his 132* against RCB in 2020 remains the highest individual score by an Indian batter in IPL history. He won the Orange Cap in 2020 with 670 runs for Punjab Kings, and his career average of 46.21 is the highest among all top-order batters on this list.

He reached 5,000 IPL runs in fewer innings than most others on this list. Now with the Delhi Capitals, he remains one of the most technically gifted and statistically dominant batters still active in the IPL.

8. AB de Villiers (DC/RCB) – 5,162 Runs

De Villiers scored 1,868 runs in death overs (overs 16 to 20) at a strike rate of 223, which made him the most dangerous finisher in IPL history. His highest score of 133* off just 59 balls against the Mumbai Indians in 2015 remains one of the most breathtaking individual innings ever played in the IPL. He and Kohli combined for a record partnership of 229 runs against the Gujarat Lions in 2016.

Over 4,000 of his 5,162 IPL runs came while playing for RCB, at a strike rate of 158.6, and he was inducted into the RCB Hall of Fame after retiring in 2021.

9. Ajinkya Rahane (CSK/DC/KKR/MI/RPS/RR) – 5,032 Runs

Rahane became only the ninth batter in IPL history to cross 5,000 runs in 2025, and he did it while playing for six different franchises across 17 seasons. What makes his record quietly impressive is how he reinvented his T20 game in recent years – posting a strike rate of 172.49 in 2023 for CSK, a number that surprised even his most loyal supporters. He won his first IPL title with CSK in 2023.

His 2025 season with KKR included a 390-run contribution that helped them push for the playoffs, showing a batter who remained useful and relevant well into his late thirties.

10. Chris Gayle (KKR/KXIP/PBKS/RCB) – 4,965 Runs

Gayle holds three records that may never be broken: the highest individual IPL score (175* off 66 balls), the fastest IPL century (30 balls), and the most sixes in IPL history (357). His 175* against Pune Warriors in 2013 included 17 sixes and 13 fours and was completed in under nine overs. He is tied for third in IPL centuries with six, all scored at a strike rate that made bowlers look completely helpless.

Conclusion: Kohli Leads A List That Cricket Will Never Forget

Eight thousand, six hundred and sixty-one. That number belongs to one man, and it may stay that way for a very long time. But what this list really shows is ten different ways to be great in the same format.

Kohli through consistency, Dhoni through calmness, Gayle through destruction, Warner through relentlessness, and de Villiers through pure impossibility. The IPL gave each of them a stage, and every single one of them made it their own.
